On 5 October, the LAURA MAERSK feeder, the first ever methanol container ship, entered the GCT terminal. The vessel was built at the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industrie and is scheduled to sail regularly in the Baltic Sea.
The LAURA MAERSK is 172m long and has a capacity of 2136 TEU. She called at Gdynia as part of an ongoing service from Rotterdam. Her visit is proof that the process of decarbonising shipping and the maritime industry has entered the next phase.
We hope that this modern, environmentally friendly feeder will visit our quay more often, fitting in with Hutchison Ports environmental policy and the direction in which the terminal is heading. We already have zero-emission electric container cranes in operation, work is underway to upgrade more, and the terminal is also preparing to invest to meet the Group’s environmental goals of achieving total environmental neutrality for all its ports by 2050.
